How Thick Should a Layer of Black Granite Chippings 11-16 mm Be?

When laying black granite chippings 11-16 mm, we recommend doing so in a 5 cm layer. This is an ideal thickness, not too little or too much. The 11-16 mm size is perfect for use in driveways. If the layer is too thin, the base will show through, which does not look good. If the layer is too thick, tire tracks will form. So, a layer of 5 cm, maximum 6 cm, is ideal and appropriate.

Where to Use Granite Chippings 11-16 mm?

Black granite chippings 11-16 mm are the most widely used chipping size on the market. They can be used almost anywhere, and their applications are limited only by your imagination. They can be placed in gardens, parks, around businesses, and in driveways. This is by far the most popular stone size for driveways, and it is almost always the size you see throughout Jutland, Funen, and Zealand. It is an all-around chipping that you can use wherever you want. What makes granite chippings advantageous compared to regular Danish natural stones is their angular structure. This allows the chippings to "lock" together, so they stay firmly in place without the risk of rolling.

How to Prevent Weeds in Granite Chippings

Black granite chippings 11-16 mm are excellent for controlling weeds. The key is to install them correctly from the start. There are two main methods to create a perfect solution for weed control:

Black Chippings and Weed Barrier

For this solution, you start by laying a weed barrier (preferably in black, like the one we sell). Ensure that the weed barrier covers the area properly, with overlaps. Then, lay the granite chippings in an even layer. It is a good idea to run a plate compactor or roller over the chippings once they are laid. This will lock the chippings together, ensuring they lie perfectly.

Black Chippings, Black Stone Dust, and Weed Barrier

Choose this solution if you want a perfectly stable surface with long-term weed prevention. It is the best and most reliable way to create a garden bed. First, lay the weed barrier, ensuring it covers the area properly. Then, spread about 3 cm of black stone dust. Once the black stone dust is laid, it is a good idea to compact it evenly using a plate compactor or roller. After that, spread 4-5 cm of black chippings on top. As a final step, run the plate compactor or garden roller over the newly laid chippings to ensure they are even and locked together. It is possible to skip the compaction, but it provides the best result.

Color of Granite Chippings

We offer two different types of black granite chippings 11-16 mm:

Our beautiful regular quality is deep black when wet and more muted when dry. There may be a few white stones mixed in, as the rock from which this type of stone is quarried has small white veins running through the black. This is a lovely chipping that has been very popular.

We also offer an extra black quality, which is the blackest granite chipping on the market. This variant comes from a small quarry that produces limited quantities only a few months each year. We are proud to have exclusive distribution rights for this product in Denmark. It is completely black and uniform in color.

Weight of Granite Chippings

Granite is a naturally heavy product, and black granite is among the heaviest. These black stones 11-16 mm weigh 1700 kg per m³.

What Are Granite Chippings?

Granite chippings are typically sourced from abroad, as Denmark does not have natural rock formations. Chippings are small pieces of granite rock that have been crushed and sorted into smaller sizes. We offer three different delivery methods:

Standard Delivery

Our standard delivery, also known as "sidewalk/driveway," is the method to choose if you want your maxibag placed on the road, by the curb, on the sidewalk, or just a meter into your driveway. This is a free delivery method. We recommend including a description of where you would like the product placed in your order so the driver has clear instructions.

Delivery with Mobile Forklift

This delivery solution is ideal if you need your maxibag moved using a self-propelled forklift with pneumatic tires. Our driver will arrive with a truck carrying this specialized forklift. The driver can unload the forklift from the truck and transport the product to the desired location. This type of forklift can drive on all solid surfaces, such as stone, gravel, dry grass, asphalt, and gravel roads. It is also used for deliveries in many allotment gardens where larger trucks may have difficulty accessing.

Delivery with Crane

This delivery method is suitable if you need your maxibag with granite chippings lifted over a fence or hedge. It can also be used in other situations where the product needs to be lifted over something, such as into your garden. The driver will arrive with a truck equipped with a crane and place the product where you want it.

Please note that large crane trucks require ample space. There must be a clearance height of 4.5 meters and a width of 4 meters from the main road to the final address. The crane truck can extend a maxibag 7-8 meters away from the truck.
