How is Stone Dust to Work With?
Stone dust is a finely crushed material that is easy to work with. It has a binding effect, similar to beach sand. Stone dust is easy to sweep into the joints between paving stones when dry. When wet, it becomes even more binding and is easy to compact with a plate compactor.
What is Stone Dust Used For?
Due to its good binding properties, stone dust has various applications, such as:
- Sweeping between paving stones for a weed-resistant effect.
- Creating petanque courts.
- Serving as a base layer under granite chippings.
- Providing a foundation for paths and between planting beds.
Laying Stone Dust
The correct way to build beds and driveways with granite chippings is to first spread a layer of stone dust about 3 cm thick and then compact it with a plate compactor or garden roller. Next, the granite chippings are laid on top (the chippings can also be compacted). This method ensures a consistent base color under the granite chippings, prevents sub-base gravel from working up through the chippings, and acts as a weed barrier.
Which Color of Stone Dust Should You Choose?
The color of the stone dust should be chosen based on its intended use. If it’s being used as a base under granite chippings, the color of the chippings should match the color of the stone dust—for example, black stone dust for black granite chippings. Otherwise, it often comes down to personal preference. All colors are of equally high quality and are carefully selected from our international suppliers.
