When building a petanque court, it’s important to choose the right gravel for the job. You need a gravel that compacts well, allowing the balls to roll freely, a dust-free surface, and a good drainage effect.

Building the court correctly the first time will ensure optimal performance and enjoyment for your game.

How to Build a Petanque Court

First, examine the soil conditions. Does your existing soil have good load-bearing capacity, or is additional support needed?

Construction on Soil with Good Load-Bearing Capacity

Excavate about 20 cm. We recommend first laying 20 cm of base gravel (0-32 mm), compacting it thoroughly with a plate compactor to achieve a hard surface. This will compress the base gravel by approximately 3-4 cm, resulting in a final layer of 16 cm once well-compacted. Then, apply this petanque gravel as the top layer at 3-4 cm thickness, compacting it well. You’ll end up with a perfect court, ideal for great play.

Construction on Soil with Poor Load-Bearing Capacity

In this case, start with a 10 cm layer of fill sand, compacting it well with a plate compactor for stability. Next, add about 20 cm of base gravel (0-32 mm) and compact thoroughly. Finally, add the petanque gravel (0-6 mm) as the top layer.

This recommendation aligns with the guidelines from the Danish Petanque Federation.

Delivery of Petanque Gravel in Bigbags

We deliver petanque gravel throughout Denmark. Delivery is always free if there is a fixed bridge connection. The gravel is supplied in bigbags, making it easy to handle and allowing you to place the product close to where it’s needed—even directly on the court area.

Please specify where you would like the maxibag to be placed in the delivery comments, found later in the purchasing process. If you would like the driver to call upon arrival, feel free to include that request.

Standard Delivery

Included in the price, this delivery option places your bigbag near the truck, typically on the sidewalk or in a driveway. This is our most popular option, but for building a petanque court, it may be advantageous to have the bigbag delivered closer to the court area to reduce unnecessary work.

Mobile Truck Delivery

Our smart mobile truck enables precise placement of your order exactly where you need it. Measuring 2.3 meters in width and requiring very little turning space, it allows for bigbags to be delivered deep into a property where a large truck cannot reach. This option is also ideal for summer houses or garden associations with narrow roads. Note that a mobile truck is quite heavy, so we prefer not to drive over lawns or other sensitive areas without written permission.

Crane Delivery

If your petanque court is located near a road or parking area, crane delivery may be the best solution, as it allows for the bigbag with petanque gravel to be placed directly on the court. This reduces the need for lifting since the bag can simply be cut open on-site. Arrange details with the driver as needed, and it’s always a good idea to request a callback.

Please note that large crane trucks require ample space. From the main road to the final delivery point, a clear height of 4.5 meters and width of 4 meters is necessary. The crane truck can reach a maxibag 7-8 meters away from the truck.
